Bologna, more electric bikes and fewer scooters: the municipality’s recipe for getting around town

In Bologna, the best connections are to be made on cycle paths, on foot and on board the future tram. And better connections is the theme of the 2022 edition, chosen by the European Commission, for the sustainable mobility week, from September 16 to 22. For us, it is a question of promoting everything we do in favor of cycling, walking and improving public transport, underlines the councilor for new mobility. Valentina Orioli. On the occasion of these seven days dedicated to soft and more eco-compatible mobility, organized by the Foundation for Urban Innovation, with the Municipality and the Metropolitan City of Bologna, the administration decides to start with incentives. One million euros to support the purchase by citizens of electric bikes and cargo bikes. Contribution requests can be submitted from September 13, via Spid on the dedicated municipal portal.

All incentives

Since this year, the contribution has almost doubled, from from 300 to 500 euros for pedal-assisted bicycles and from 600 to a thousand euros for cargo bicycles. As in previous years, the bonus cannot exceed 50% of the expenses incurred; may be required by residing in the municipality of Bologna, by all those who live in the metropolitan area and are employed in the workplaces of Bologna in organizations and companies that have a mobility management agreement with the capital. The administration hopes to be able to encourage the purchase of 2,000 electric bikes, to reach 7 thousand from 2011 to today. Contributions will be paid according to the chronological order in which applications are submitted, until the funds are exhausted. And still on the subject of electric bicycles, the use of the service is increasing electric bike sharing, as confirmed by Simona Larghetti, municipal councilor and delegate for cycle mobility: We now record 3,000 daily journeys, a very interesting figure for the objectives we have set ourselves; now the service is also active at the airport.

Scooter brake: Difficult to prevent them in the arcades

But there are no plans on the horizon to extend the service to electric scooters, common in other Italian and European cities. 63 kilometers of arcades – explains Councilor Orioli -, a space prohibited for bicycles and which would be even more difficult prevent the use of shared scooters, we have therefore chosen a precautionary principle. But it is not a question of demonizing private scooters: they are not a new public enemy – comments Larghetti – According to the latest surveys by the road safety observatory, scooters only concern 1.2% of accidents, there are no scooter issues to deal with, but it’s still the big theme of high speed on the roads. And on that, the news announced on the installation of other veloxes will arrive soon: We are still working on it, confirms Orioli.

Sustainable mobility events

The heart of the sustainable mobility week in Bologna will be Lucio Dalla Square. Here, among others, on Saturday 17, the arrival of the suggestive Bike Pride is expected, the great ride through the streets of the city, to celebrate the Bicipolitan Festival. And still there, Saturday at noon scheduled the auction of low cost used bicycles. Among the many initiatives planned, at the Jumbo workshop, from Friday 16, children’s bike lessons and bike workshop managed by the Piazza Grande. At 5.30 p.m., inauguration of the new educational cycle path in the Fava garden. Throughout the week, conferences, debates, exhibitions, trekking, focus on cycle paths, until Thursday 22 September, with the debate from 19 to 21 under the roof of Nervi entitled La mobilit che mobilita, which also sees speeches by administrators from other European cities in Belgium and Germany; to close with the music of Les Têtes de Bois and their eco-show powered by the public, who pedal on 100 bicycles to turn on the lights and sounds of the stage.
