According to the latest data published by UNWTO World Tourism Barometerin the first seven months of 2022, international tourist arrivals almost tripled (+172%) compared to the same period in 2021. This means that the sector has recovered almost 60% of its pre-pandemic levels .

Steady recovery reflects strong pent-up demand for international travelas well as the easing or abolition of travel restrictions to date (86 countries had no COVID-19 related restrictions as of September 19, 2022).

The trend observed at the international level is also reflected on the national territory: analyze data relating to the attendance of Italian hotel guests in the first half of this year, the growth in attendance is immediately obvious after the severe decline in 2020 and 2021, mainly caused by the closures due to the pandemics. However, this is a partial recovery, mainly determined by an increase in Italian customers (+ 7.1%), while on the front of arrivals from abroad we still note a drop of 10.4% . Overall, the figure referring to 2022 is therefore 2.7% below 2019 levels: in fact, although foreign arrivals in the first half of the year more than tripled compared to 2021, they remain 36% below those of 2019.

As for the place summer 2022, the preliminary figures show + 16.6% arrivals and + 14.3% overnight stays; a result considered quite satisfactory given the situation of uncertainty caused by the military crisis in Ukraine and the general increase in prices, which reduced the purchasing power of many tourists.
In particular, with regard to foreign tourists, there was an increase of 25.7% (although the same figure is still 28.3% lower than in 2019).
Choose Italy this summer it was mainly Germans, French, Dutch, Swiss, Austrians, British, Belgians, Americans, Spaniards and Scandinavians, while the regions with the best performances were Sardinia, Sicily, Campania and Liguria; for the others, the data is still far from that of 2019.
As for the choice of vacation spots, also in the summer of 2022 sees a predominance of seaside resorts, with a strong recovery in hotel reservations, particularly in August (+71.2%) followed by those in the mountains (+61.9%). In recovery, after the brutal slowdown of 2020 – 2021, also the cities of art, especially in the months of July and August. (+ 34% of hotel reservations).

The hospitality industry

Hotel installations in Italy at the end of 2021 totaled 32,109, i.e. 5.3% less than 10 years earlier: a fall which mainly concerned structures of lesser value. The closures mainly affected 1-star hotels (-33.6%) which at the end of 2021 amounted to 2,398 units, followed by 2-star hotels (5,110.23.2%) while the light (-1, 4%) was the drop in the 3-star category which is confirmed as the most numerous with 17,783 hotels across the country. Conversely, 5-star (+56.9% for a total of 601 units) and 4-star (+19% and 6,217 units) hotels are progressing; globally in Italy the supply of rooms is 1,075,592 units and 2,232,676 beds.

A phenomenon that should not be underestimated is also the gradual growth of the alternative offer to hotels, represented by private accommodation, for rent on various web platforms: over the period June-August 2022, for example, overnight stays on Airbnb were 3.5 million. more than in the same period of 2021 (+ 32%).

In the first quarter of 2022, in terms of turnover, tourist accommodation and catering services show an increase of 109.2% compared to the corresponding period of 2021, while in terms of employment, the hotel and public enterprise sector could count on 1,000,716 employees (the hotel sector alone had 204,110 employees). In this regard, it is interesting to highlight how, especially at the end of the pandemic, an increasing number of companies are reporting serious difficulties in finding staff.
